On February 9, 2009 at 8:27 pm the building caught fire. The cause has been linked to a massive Chinese New Year fireworks display in the compound, authorized by CCTV itself.
The blaze rendered the 31-story structure unusable, as the zinc and titanium alloy of the outer skin was burnt.
